Blogger Etiquette

First of all I am trying to figure out if I spelled etiquette right or not...I guess I'll find out if I remember to spell check before I post. It is a coin toss each time I blog.

Before I forget I am doing my I Win You Win book borrow-away from Robin at Be Still and Know on Friday so come back and bring your friends and join me, The Bug, Linda at 2nd Cup, and Robin at Be Still and Know and try to win a chance to read the book Sisterchicks in Wooden Shoes. It is a fun book about a friendship that isn't dependent on proximity.

Now that I have been blogging for nearly a year and still haven't read my Blogger for Dummies book, I am still a little in the dark on the ins and outs of blogging. If you haven't guessed by now I am a fly by the seat of my pants kind of girl.
However my current question is probably not in this book because it has to do with blogger etiquette...Here goes:

When someone posts a comment to your blog are you supposed to respond in a comment on your blog or a comment on their blog?

I am afraid if I post to my blog they aren't going to know about it unless they come back...and quite frankly people I am lucky to get someone to look at my blog one time let alone come back. If I post to their blog which obviously will have nothing to do with their current post I'll seem a little loony...and I know that isn't a far stretch, but I'd like to keep all of that loony-ness a secret as long as possible. I am usually sneaky and comment on something that is relative to their blog and then sneak in a response to mine, but then I always worry that I am committing a faux pas. Kinda like wearing dark nylons with white shoes...not SO bad but someone will notice and think I am a tool.

I know that my comments are few and far between, but I am a chit chatter by nature and I like to answer back when someone says something to me. It seems like I am virtually ignoring them by not responding. Kind of like virtually yelling at someone when you type in all caps. Which drives me crazy by the way. Especially now that I am channelling a 21 year old girl with the news of my engagement...I would like to virtually squeal with all those kind souls congratulating me.

What do you think? What do you all do? Please leave me a comment and depending on your response maybe I'll comment back...

P.S. I'd also like to know how you draw a line through one of the words you type...I know I should really quit while I'm ahead.

  1. Hey there! I posted a link for your giveaway tomorrow on my blog.

To answer your question. I generally do not respond to every comment left on my blog, but if I am able to respond directly to them via email, if they have it enabled I will do that. Sometimes if they have left an exceptionally sweet comment and I can't email them then I will go over to their blog and thank them for stopping by.

For the past few months I have been using a program called Windows Live Writer. It is a free download from Microsoft. It has made my blogging so simple. You can edit text, and much more with out having to remember all the HTML codes.

Here is the link if you want to check it out: http://download.live.com/writer

anywhoo here is the code for doing the strike through but I will have to put spaces in it or it will not show up in this comment.

    < strike > hordes of locust < / strike >

If you type this code with out the spaces and then what ever you type in the middle will be striked through.

Hope this helps. I know all the stuff you have to learn when you first begin blogging can be overwhelming. But it all works out in the end.

Here is a great website with lots of helpful information on different things about blogging.I use this one all the time.

  2. a dilemma for sure....here is what I do-

I see if they have email with their blog. If so I send an email.

If it is a no-reply blogger (hate that by the way but maybe that's just me)...then I leave a comment on their blog even if my comment is not related to their current post. I usually start by saying something like thanks for visiting because that way other people who read may get the context.

If it is a comment that comes up with multiple bloggers then I may post something in my own comments...that generally only happens when something needs to be clarified in a post I wrote.

For the most part if I comment on your blog I don't go back and look at the comments later. I go on to the next post. I have a couple blogs I follow that I know post comments within their own comments so those I might check but it gets confusing. My general rule is once I've read a post and commented I don't revisit unless I am really interested in the topic-then I might go back to see what others say.

Sorry you asked? My biggest comment problem is brevity. Could you guess?

  3. When I post a comment on the blog, if I want to see what other people say, or if I think the author will respond to my comment there, I'll follow the comments for that post. On your site I would (& usually do!) click the "subscribe by email" link. I have a lot of bloggy people who do respond in their comments.

I do a poor job of responding. Mainly I do it in my own comments. Then sometimes I go to the person's blog. But, you know, it makes sense to email them a reply especially if it's not something anyone else would care about. As you can see, I don't believe there's a rule on this!

I'm able to do the strike-through thing because I upgraded my editor (go to Customize, Settings, then almost at the bottom under Global Settings Select post editor - Updated editor).

  4. Hey, thanks for stopping by and commenting on my magazine post! Loved your Slimfast followed by Duncan Hines, etc.

Re: your post: I often just come to the other person's blog and read their latest (like above) and leave them a comment. Sometimes I've seen someone else's comment and thought it looked interesting and went and checked them out too. Sometimes I just respond via email, but I like to see my own comment numbers grow, so I generally, leave comments on their blog.

I only leave comments on my own blog when someone asks a good question that I think another reader may be interested in. For example, I posted about embroidering dish towels a couple of days ago and someone asked me what pattern I used. I emailed her the info, but also added a comment to the post so if anyone else was interested, they wouldn't have to ask twice.

Very excited about Robin's comments. I've always wondered about the strike code myself.

I do not have too many comments in a day to not respond so I always try to show an interest in their blogs, as well...every time. I've connected with people this way and made some new friends.

Each blogger is different and I've been doing it less than a year so I might be missing some etiquette right along with you.

    Thanks for asking the questions!

  5. I need that book, Blogging for Dummies! If it weren't for my children, I would have never started a blog. They have really helped me and I still have a long way to go. Fellow bloggers are real helpful too. Thanks for the wonderful giveaway. Love and blessings from NC!
